Get Your BeeTreasure!

give your garden's wild bees what they actually need: a habitat built around how they behave.

The UK has lost 13 wild bee species entirely. More than a third of those remaining are in measurable decline. And one of the most overlooked reasons is this: most bee hotels aren't designed around how bees actually nest. The wrong tunnel diameter. The wrong depth. No weatherproof roof. No protection from parasites.

A poorly designed bee hotel doesn't just sit unused — it can actively disrupt nesting behaviour and leave broods exposed. Clayton Dawson has watched this happen for 43 years. He's also watched what happens when you get it right.

The BeeTreasure is the result of 43 years of observation in the gardens and orchards of the Cotswolds — built by one craftsman, in one workshop, with one purpose: to give wild bees a habitat that actually works.

🐝 why this bee hotel is different

Variable tunnel diameters: — Different solitary bee species need different tunnel widths. Red mason bees, leafcutter bees, masked bees — each requires a different diameter. The BeeTreasure offers the full range across multiple tiers. One size fits none. A range fits all.

Solid untreated Western red cedar — No paint. No lacquer. No chemical smell that deters bees. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and has been used in outdoor structures for centuries. At 19mm wall thickness it insulates — nest warmth stays in during cool British springs; the interior stays cool during summer.

Hand-formed copper roof — Channels rain completely away from the nesting face before a drop reaches the wood. Copper doesn't rust, doesn't crack, and develops a patina that only improves with age. Clayton has seen plastic roofs split after a single British winter. Copper outlasts everything else in the garden.

Mirror-smooth tunnel interiors — Every tunnel is hand-sanded until completely smooth. A bee enters and exits her tunnel thousands of times during nesting season. Any roughness causes wing damage over time. "Run your little finger inside. If you feel anything at all — the tunnel isn't ready."

Solid rear panel — Parasitic wasps attack solitary bee brood from behind, drilling through thin rear panels to reach the larvae. Clayton's solid rear wall makes this impossible. The nesting chamber becomes a secure, protected environment for the entire brood cycle.

⚠️ why this matters right now

Nesting season is underway. The first red mason bees are already emerging across the South of England — prospecting for suitable nest sites, measuring tunnel openings, deciding where to raise this spring's brood. Once a bee species finds a reliable site, it returns every season.

Clayton has documented occupation in his yellowed notebook for over 40 years. "Built this one for a man who runs an orchard near Ledbury. Twenty-three years ago. Same south-facing wall. He sent me a photograph last spring — every hole sealed with clay. Red mason bees. Every single year, without fail, since 2003."

  • Clayton's care tip:

"South or south-east facing, between one and two metres off the ground. Morning sun is important — it warms the nesting face and gets the bees active early. Near flowering plants if possible, but not essential. Don't move it once it's occupied. The bees will find it — and remember it."

What Our Customers Are Saying

Rita C.

I've tried three different bee hotels online over the past four years. Not a single one was ever occupied. Hung the BeeTreasure on my fence in early March — by the second week of April, eleven holes were sealed. I could see the bees working. You can tell this is craftsmanship, not factory work.

Bought this as a retirement gift for my father. He spent 35 years in roofing and the first thing he said was: 'Feel that copper. That's not decorative — that's proper flashing work.' He mounted it himself and said it was the most solidly built garden piece he'd ever handled.

Fourth spring on a south-facing wall. Survived a full British summer. The cedar still looks excellent — the copper has developed a beautiful patina. The milling quality is the best I've seen on anything this size, and I'm a cabinetmaker by trade.

  • Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Email: support@craftingfolks.com

What are the dimensions and specifications?

Cedar body: solid untreated Western red cedar, 19mm wall thickness throughout. Tunnel diameters: 2mm to 10mm variable range. Tunnel depth: 15–20cm — correct depth for UK red mason bees and leafcutter bees. Copper roof: hand-formed, fully weatherproof. Steel mount: heavy-duty, three hanging options. Ready to hang immediately — no assembly required.

Which bees will use it?

The variable tunnel range is calibrated for UK solitary bee species — red mason bees, leafcutter bees, masked bees and several others. These are solitary bees, not honey bees or bumblebees. They don't live in colonies, don't produce honey, and are responsible for a significant proportion of UK garden pollination. Clayton has documented over a dozen species using his hotels across 43 years of observation.

Will the bees sting me, my children, or my pets?

"Wild solitary bees are the most peaceful garden visitors you'll ever have," Clayton says. "They're solitary — no colony to defend, no reason to be aggressive. Their sting is so mild it barely registers, and they simply don't sting unless physically handled. You can sit right next to the hotel with a cup of tea and watch them work. I've been doing it for 40 years."

Where should I hang it?

South or south-east facing, between one and two metres off the ground. Morning sun is important — it warms the nesting face and gets the bees active early. On a wall, fence, or post that doesn't move in wind. Near flowering plants if possible, but not essential. Don't move it once it's been placed — solitary bees return to the same site every season.

Do I need to bring it inside over winter?

"Please don't. The larvae inside need the natural cold of a British winter to develop properly and hatch at the right time in spring. If you bring it into a warm garage, they emerge too early — when there's nothing yet in bloom. The cedar body and copper roof are fully weatherproof. Leave it outside, year-round. That's what it's built for."

Can I return my order if I don't like it?

Of course. We stand behind everything on CraftingFolks 100%. If you're not happy, neither are we. Just shoot us an email within 30 days and we'll make it right — no hassle, no headaches.

The house is 48cm long × 40cm wide × 20cm tall. Solid and substantial — large enough for an adult hedgehog to nest comfortably, correctly proportioned to retain body heat through hibernation.

Where is the best place to put it?

Against a north or east-facing fence or hedge — sheltered from direct sun and rain, with a clear approach route through low planting. The entrance should face away from open ground. Add a handful of dry straw inside. Leave it undisturbed. Check it in spring to see if it's been used.
